"In August 1999 the so-called IBANs (International Bank Account Numbers) have been introduced in most European countries in order to provide unique numbers for international money transfers. The length of these numbers, consisting of up to 38 alphanumeric digits, varies from country to country. In order to check whether a given IBAN is valid (a typo might have occurred when the number was communicated to you), this program checks its validity. As a byproduct a BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number, e.g. 'FR 2004 1010 0505 0001 3M02 606' for a French account), as used by banks, can be entered in this program to calculate the corresponding IBAN (in this case: 'IBAN FR14 2004 1010 0505 0001 3M02 606').
