fer is a database reporting tool that enables non-technical users to create reports. It is a unique end-user reporting tool designed to allow employees to locate and view data by simply 'browsing' through a list of prepared descriptions. It allows untrained, non-technical users to create and print simple reports in a matter of minutes without requiring any knowledge of the database or its internal structure."InfoSurfer has three major components -- two programs and a Microsoft Access database called the Descriptive Data Interface (DDI). The Admin program is used by the IT Department's 'techies', the Desktop program is the end-user reporting tool, and the DDI is the common data store shared by both programs. InfoSurfer supports any type of database that can be accessed through ODBC, including MS-Access, MS SQL Server, MS Excel, dBase, Oracle and others."Once an ODBC connection to a database has been established, the administrator uses the Admin program to enter English-language descriptions of the database into the DDI. Descriptions can be entered for some or all tables (files) and columns (fields). Only those items described in the DDI are available to the end-user, so the administrator can choose to omit or obscure sensitive items from the 'view' seen by the end-user. Each description can be assigned a generic type (Name, Address, Date, etc.) and a list of relationships. After the administrator has constructed the DDI, the end-user uses the Desktop program to create, save and manage reports. The various components of Desktop are organized as a series of tabs labeled Categories, Preview, Only If, Sorts, Groups, Totals, Numbers and Other Stuff. Each tab controls a different aspect of the finished report, which can be displayed in Quick or Report views using large buttons at the top of the screen."
