The Personal Portal Server creates a portal into your computer. When you are not at home, you can access your Outlook email, calendar and contacts via any Web or WAP device. You can share files, download and upload them to your computer. More than file sharing, you can even run programs remotely from the Web to handle tasks while away. All you need is an IP address and an always-on connection, something that any cable-modem or DSL customer has. If you want to access all of your personal information from work, this is an ideal solution. It also doesn't require you to stop using Outlook to use some new PIM, so you can continue to have all the benefits of Outlook, but via the web. No need to install an FTP server, mail server or anything complicated to get at your information. Using a web browser or cell phone, you might log onto your home computer, send and receive emails, check and create appointments, see your entire contact list and download a document you need. All of this using your existing Outlook connections. If your computer is connected to an Exchange Server, that will work too. Moreover, you can also share your portal with a guest, but limit access. This is great if you are interested in sharing your calendar, or maybe a file directory, but everything else is personal. The Personal Portal Server also supports WAP devices such as cell phones so that you can check your email using your cell phone.
