VDE is a small, fast text editor and word processor that is surprisingly powerful and customizable. It runs under DOS and DOS shells, including Windows 3.x/9x. It has been Y2K*compliant since version 1.81, in 1996. VDE is not, as many fine DOS programs unfortunately are, an orphan, but is still being developed by its original author, Eric Meyer. Note that while VDE may be downloaded free of charge, registration and payment of a fee will get you an add*on spell checker as well as support from the author. Site licenses are also available. The newest veresion, 1.9, handles large files.
