The Microsoft Windows Installer is an installation and configuration service that ships as part of the Microsoft Windows 2000/Me operating systems, and is provided in a service pack to Windows 95/98/NT 4.0. This release addresses the needs of corporate deployment and provides a standard format for component management. This beta release is an update to the Windows Installer that supports new features, including the ability to install Microsoft.NET assemblies and applications on 64-bit Windows; digital signatures for MSI, MST, and MSP files; Web enabled Setup.exe bootstrapper for Internet download; configurable and customizable merge modules; improved reinstall and patching support; and more. Note: This version of Microsoft Windows Installer is a beta release and may contain bugs; CNET strongly recommends that you save all mission-critical documents before installing this software.
