"NetWitness is an advanced LAN capture and processing system that is fully configurable. It collects traffic from a network, defragments the packets, and then reassembles the packets into sessions. The session application type is interpreted, and the application data is parsed into a generic meta file format representing 100% of the network IP transactions with 99% data reduction. In other words, one terabyte of traffic reduces to ten gigabytes of NetWitness meta information. In addition, the collector can save all of the session content for analysis. The Collector also has built-in analysis tools that enable on-the-spot analysis and investigation of network traffic. The data produced by the NetWitness Collectors is a complete record of all IP based traffic. The data can be archived or analyzed on the spot for proactive or reactive investigations and surveillance across multiple data sources. With NetWitness, administrators can see what web sites users are visiting, who users are e-mailing, and what other applications are present on their network from a passive collection point. The protocols it interprets is limited to HTTP and SMTP. The commercial version interprets over 30 protocols and allows the data to be uploaded to a central database."
